Free Speaker Test

Speaker Test plays sound on the left, right or both channels, a 20 Hz to 20 kHz sweep, a tone generator and bass steps from 20 to 120 Hz to find where your speakers or headphones fade. A polarity test compares in-phase and out-of-phase noise to catch swapped wires. Safari always plays through the system output.

Quick answers

My left and right are swapped. What now?

Swap the cables or speakers, or check that headphones are worn the right way (L on the left ear). Some sound drivers also have a balance or channel-swap setting.

Why can't I hear the lowest bass notes?

Small speakers physically can't move enough air for deep bass: laptop and phone speakers usually fade below 100–200 Hz, while a subwoofer can reach 30 Hz or lower.

How to use the Speaker Test

  1. Turn your volume down, then press Left, Both and Right to check each channel.
  2. Play the frequency sweep and note where the low and high ends fade.
  3. Use the tone generator and the bass steps to probe specific frequencies.
  4. Compare in-phase and out-of-phase noise to check that your speakers are wired correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What does the polarity test tell me?

With two speakers, the in-phase noise should sound centered and full. If the out-of-phase version sounds fuller instead, one speaker's + and − wires are swapped.

Is the tone generator safe?

Keep the volume low. Loud test tones, especially high frequencies or deep bass through headphones, can harm your hearing or damage small speakers.
