Free Keyboard Test

Keyboard Test checks every key on a full-size ANSI or ISO layout with Windows/Linux or Mac labels: each key lights up while held and turns green once it works. Hold several keys to measure rollover and spot ghosting, and read key, code and location in the event log. The Fn key and some system shortcuts never reach the browser.

Quick answers

Which keys can't a browser detect?

The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard and never reaches the computer. The operating system also keeps some keys and shortcuts for itself, such as the Windows key alone, Alt+Tab, Cmd+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Cmd+Space and, on Windows, Print Screen (only the release is reported). Browser shortcuts like Ctrl+W or Ctrl+T are left working on purpose. Media and brightness keys depend on the system.

What is ghosting and key rollover?

Rollover is how many keys a keyboard can register at the same time. Many office keyboards handle about 6 keys, gaming keyboards often all of them (N-key rollover). Ghosting is when a combination is blocked or an extra key appears that you did not press. Hold several keys and watch the “Most keys at once” counter.

Frequently asked questions

A key shows a different label than the character I typed. Is it broken?

No. The test identifies physical keys by position (the “code”), so on non-US layouts the label on screen may differ from the printed key. The “key” column in the log shows the character your layout produces.

Is anything I type recorded?

Key presses are shown only on this page and are never sent anywhere. Reloading or pressing Reset clears them.
